Paul Gemperli

Paul Gemperli (born January 5, 1930 in Herisau ; † February 23, 2015 ) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

biography

Gemperli attended primary and secondary schools in Herisau and Degersheim before moving to the St. Gallen Cantonal School . After finishing school, he studied law at the University of Friborg and received his licentiate in 1953. In 1958 he was admitted to the bar of the Canton of St. Gallen . He then worked as a lawyer and from 1960 to 1963 was a district lawyer at the Swiss Federal Military Insurance and from 1963 to 1968 head of the legal service of the St. Gallen tax administration. From 1969 to 1975 he was deputy head of the St. Gallen tax administration, from 1975 to 1978.

He was politically active as President of the CVP St. Gallen from 1973 to 1980 and from 1979 to 1992 he was a member of the government of the Finance Department. From 1986 to 1993 he was on the Presidium of CVP Switzerland. On November 25, 1991 he was elected to the Council of States , where he was a member of the Finance Commission and the Commission for Science, Education and Culture, which he also chaired. In 1993 he was appointed President of the Council on General Defense. In the 1999 parliamentary elections, he did not run, and therefore left the small chamber on December 5, 1999.

Gemperli was married, had three children and lived in St. Gallen . He was a colonel in the Swiss Army . He died on February 23, 2015 at the age of 85.
