Paul Griffin (born September 1, 1979 in Tralee ) is a retired Irish rower and cross-country skier .

Career

rowing

Griffin started rowing at an early age at the Muckross Rowing Club in Killarney and later at the Fossa Rowing Club. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he was one of the lightweight four without a helmsman and finished sixth together with Richard Archibald , Eugene Coakley and Niall O'Toole . At the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne in 2005, Griffin was able to win a gold medal for his home country for the first time. At the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu , Japan , which took place shortly afterwards , he won silver with the lightweight four-man without a helmsman. Griffin was then awarded the Kerry Sports Star Award for his achievements in rowing . Three years later at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , he reached tenth place in the same discipline with the team. At the World Rowing Championships in 2006 on Dorney Lake near Eton , he achieved the bronze medal in the lightweight foursome together with Gearoid Towey , Eugene Coakley and Richard Archibald.

Cross-country skiing

Griffin has been active as a cross-country skier for his home country since the 2008/09 season and completed his first competitions in the Alpine Cup in February 2009. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he started in the 50 km freestyle discipline, but was lapped and scored 61st in the end. In the FIS races that took place after the World Championship , Griffin either did not start or only scored back places. At the US Championships in Anchorage in 2010 , he achieved 99th place. Only twelve days later he reached 36th place out of a total of 37 starters at the FIS race in Bozeman .
