Paul Hartig (philologist)

Paul Hartig (born July 1, 1898 in Erfurt ; † June 15, 1997 in Berlin ) was a German English and Romance studies and headmaster of the French grammar school in Berlin from 1952 to 1964.

The merchant's son Hartig studied Romance languages, English and history at the universities of Jena and Berlin up to the state examination in 1925. He also did military service and won the Iron Cross, 2nd class , in the First World War . In 1924 he received his doctorate in Berlin. From 1927 he was a teacher at the Berlin Westend School and a lecturer at the Berlin University. Bernhard Groethuysen was one of his intellectual friends .

In the period after 1945 he paved the way for Franco-German understanding. As early as 1946 he pointed to the modern French authors as "leaders of humanity". Hartig was executive chairman of the German-French Society Berlin eV from 1954 to 1967, to which he had already belonged as a study assessor in 1926 . He also published writings on Franco-German history such as Queen Luise of Prussia . In 1990 he became an honorary member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .
