Paul Hilpert

Paul Hilpert (born December 26, 1893 in Gehren (Thuringia), † March 13, 1939 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German psychiatrist and National Socialist university professor.

Life

Hilpert completed his Abitur in Sonneberg in 1912 and studied medicine at the University of Leipzig . In 1914 he registered as a volunteer during the First World War and was assigned to a hospital: 1915 field surgeon, from 1916 troop doctor on the western front (awards: Iron Cross II. Class; Saxon Albrecht Order with Swords). In 1919 he passed the medical state examination and received his license to practice medicine .

Hilpert was a volunteer physician at the Psychiatric University Hospital in Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1920 , Dr. med. From 1920 to 1923 he was an assistant doctor at a sanatorium in Bad Freienwalde (Oder) , in 1923 he moved to the Psychiatric University Clinic Jena , where he completed his habilitation in 1927 and was appointed associate professor in 1930. Since 1934 senior physician, he represented in Greifswald in 1935 , from January 1, 1937 he represented the professorship for psychiatry and neurology at the University of Halle . He made a great career. On February 1, he was appointed director of the University Psychiatric Clinic and a personal professor. In a speech on Martin Luther's birthday, he said that a good ten percent of the German population can be described as “hereditary disease in the broadest sense” and that their genetic makeup should therefore be released “for eradication”. From February 1938, as dean of the medical faculty, he publicly advocated the eradication of the "inferior". Intended as his successor by Johannes Weigelt , Hilpert was appointed prorector at the end of 1938 and in January 1939 he was appointed full professor. Hilpert died unexpectedly of pneumonia after a flu. His students like Ernst Baumhard were active in the T4 campaign .

From 1912 to 1923 Hilpert was a member of the Pan-German Association , from February 1931 a supporting member of the SS . In March 1933 he signed the declaration of 300 university lecturers for Adolf Hitler . From May 1933 he was NSDAP - Member no. 3,136,470, from 1933 to 1935 also unterscharführer , then in the plane regional committee of the DLV .
