Paul Hoffmann (Physiologist)

Paul Hoffmann (* June 19 . Jul / 1. July  1884 greg. In Tartu ; † 9. March 1962 in Freiburg ) was a German physiologist , among other things named after him H-reflex discovered.

Life

Hoffmann was born in Dorpat in the Russian Empire in 1884 as the son of the internist Friedrich Albin Hoffmann . He studied medicine in Berlin and Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in 1909. After two years as an employee of the Berlin University, he became an assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Würzburg in 1911 and completed his habilitation there in 1912 under Maximilian von Frey . In 1924 he was appointed professor of physiology at the University of Freiburg . In 1956 he retired in Freiburg.

Scientific contributions

Hoffmann's scientific work focused on the field of neurophysiology . His most important discovery was the H-reflex , an electroneurographic method of neurophysiology. In 1925 he was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
