Paul Kalbeck

Paul Johannes Kalbeck (born July 15, 1884 in Obernigk , Silesia, † November 5, 1949 in Bern ) was an actor, director and writer.

Life

Kalbeck was the son of the German music writer Max Kalbeck . His godfather was Johannes Brahms . Born in Prussian Silesia, he grew up in Vienna . From 1905 he studied drama with Alexander Roempler and Ferdinand Gregori at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde . Kalbeck also had engagements from 1905 in Meiningen and Kattowitz , but also in Bremen , Berlin and Dessau . From 1917 Kalbeck also worked as a director. In 1916 he married the actress Helene Thimig , from whom he was divorced in 1918. In 1919 he married the daughter of the industrialist Isidor Mautner , Marie .

With Helene's brother Hans Thimig , he founded the New School for Dramatic Lessons in 1923 , from which the Reinhardt Seminar emerged in 1929 . From 1923 to 1938 Kalbeck was also a director at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. Kalbeck received the title of professor in 1936 , but was dismissed from the theater after the Anschluss . While his wife fled to England, he emigrated to Switzerland with their son Florian Kalbeck .

From Switzerland he tried in vain to obtain an entry visa to the USA. In 1942 he became senior director in Bern. After the war he returned to Josefstadt as a guest director. In 1949 he was still director of the drama seminar at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He died in November.
