The Max Reinhardt Seminar is a drama school in Vienna that was founded in 1928 by Max Reinhardt . The seat is at Palais Cumberland in Penzinger Strasse in the 14th district , across from Schönbrunn Palace .

The seminar offers four years of study, which is led by around 40 teachers, including well-known actors and directors . After the second semester , the study is divided into individual branches of study; Acting and directing can be studied. The Schönbrunn Palace Theater is also used during the course. The seminar belongs to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

history

On November 13, 1928, Minister of Education Richard Schmitz (1885–1954) opened the acting and directing school of the University of Music and Performing Arts initiated by director and theater director Max Reinhardt (1873–1943) in the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn . The seat of the institute under the direction of Reinhardt ( Reinhardt School ), which offered a two-year training course, was initially the Schönbrunn Palace Theater, where performances also took place and which has remained an important venue to this day.

The program promoted an all-encompassing overall training that was not limited to conventional training as an actor: “The future theater director and director, dramaturge and playwright also have the opportunity in the seminar to familiarize themselves with the essence of today's theater from the ground up and so to step into the ever more urgently required, living connection with the stage and its needs. At the same time, the listeners are made familiar with the necessities of film and sound film and are trained in dance, acrobatic and general intellectual critical. "

The school's statutes (soon officially called the acting and directing seminar ) quoted the speech given by Reinhardt on the occasion of the start of teaching on April 23, 1929 in the Schönbrunn Palace Theater (which had not been used for months): “Don't grumble about the drill in art , about the limitation of ingenuity. Nothing can happen to real nature. She is always ready and determined, she absorbs everything that can grow in her. Whoever trembles for his nature has none! We are all passionate nature lovers, cannibals, fire worshipers. Be true If you want to be a good comedian, you mustn't act comedy on stage or in life. Become essential! "

After the dissolution of the University of Applied Sciences for Music and Performing Arts on September 1, 1931, the seminar was continued as a private institute ( Reinhardt Academy ); The seat of the school was still the Schönbrunn Palace Theater.

From 1930 to 1938 Emil Geyer (1872–1942), director and director of the theater in der Josefstadt, was the director of the seminar . Many teachers came from there who were connected to Max Reinhardt and his ideals through their work, the actor Hans Thimig , the author Joseph Gregor , the Stanislawski student Iwan Schmith, the director Paul Kalbeck and the language teacher Zdenko Kestranek, plus Friedrich Schreyvogl , Emil Kläger and Erhard Buschbeck . Stage design was taught by Alfred Roller and Oskar Strnad , from 1935 also by Otto Niedermoser , whose classes were held at the Academy of Applied Arts . Paul Kalbeck, who later became Hollywood director Otto Preminger, and Max Reinhardt himself taught directing .

Among the many guest students at Max Reinhardt's internationally oriented school, there were English and Swiss as well as Russians, Finns, Swedes, Dutch and Japanese, whose school fees were vital for the seminar. There were even English-language performances to prepare students for international careers.

In the academic year 1934/1935, a stage design department was set up under the direction of Alfred Roller and Oskar Strnad. The curriculum encompassed stylistics in building, furnishing and clothing, the psychology of stage design, lighting, stage technology, floor plan and detail drawing, model work, painting, modeling, casting and the "execution of the students' designs in the workshops and furnishings on the Stage for public performances of the seminar ”.

After the "Anschluss" of Austria , most of the teachers and also many students and graduates had to flee into exile from persecution by the National Socialists . The name “Max Reinhardt Seminar” was abolished (the new name of the institute was “Acting and Directing Seminar Schönbrunn”) and the seminar was attached to the Reich University of Applied Sciences . The head of the seminar was the NSDAP member Otto Niederführ, who in 1938 was also responsible for the “ de-Judaization ” of the seminar. In 1940 the acting and directing seminar moved to the nearby Palais Cumberland in Vienna-Penzing . In 1941/42 it was named "Burgtheater Drama School". In 1942 the Reinhardt student and employee Eugen Her (i) bert Kuchenbuch was appointed professor after his return from his exile in Turkey (where he worked with Paul Hindemith and Alfred Braun). He was the provisional leader of the seminar in the transition period from 1945. (Among other things, he was director of the theater “ Die Stephansspieler ” until 1947 ). In 1945 the reopening took place under the name "Max Reinhardt Seminar".

Today's name is "Max Reinhardt Seminar", Institute for Drama and Drama Directing. With the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn , which was renovated in 1979/1980 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary and also technically renewed in 2007 , a new studio stage (opened in 1992), the old studio stage in the palace, which was redesigned in 2003, and the arena, the seminar now has a total of four venues.
