Gerald Uhlig

Gerald Uhlig (born September 26, 1953 in Heidelberg ; † July 4, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German director , actor and author.

Life

After studying drama, directing and cultural management at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna ( Max Reinhardt Seminar ), he worked as a director and actor at numerous German-speaking theaters (including Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg , Schauspiel Frankfurt , TAT Frankfurt , Free Volksbühne Berlin ). In addition, he realized theater performances as an author, director and producer in places such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle , Kunsthalle Schirn Frankfurt, and the Berlin Academy of the Arts.

From 1992 to 1994 he realized three music theater projects as a librettist and director about Otto Dix Das Lied des Karpfen in the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin , about Pablo Picasso Picasso or I Follow the Matador in the Kulturforum Berlin and about George Grosz Gott Da-Da Grosz in the Matthäikirche Berlin .

Since 1992, Uhlig has also presented his visual works, photos and collages to the public in more than 150 group and solo exhibitions. In 1994 Uhlig staged the underwater opera Von Fischen und Menschen in the Zooaquarium Berlin.

From 1987 to 1992 Uhlig was also the moderator of the weekly radio talk table talk on Radio 107 and NDR 4 in Hamburg. As an author, Uhlig has written numerous pieces for the stage.

In cooperation with Yoko Ono , he staged the world premiere of the Yoko Ono and John Lennon musicals New York Story in Saarland and Berlin in 1996 .

In 1996 he opened the Café Einstein Unter den Linden and the associated “Galerie im Einstein”, where he has from then on photo exhibitions with international photo artists such as Dennis Hopper , Wim Wenders , Helmut Newton and others. v. a. realized. In 2008 he took part in the project "hamlet_X" // Phase 2 by the Berlin artist Herbert Fritsch . At the beginning of 2016, Uhlig sold Café Einstein Unter den Linden to a catering consortium.

Gerald Uhlig was the carrier of an inherited genetic defect ( Fabry disease ), which he passed on to his daughter. He described the search for the correct diagnosis and his life with the disease in his book And Yet I Live. My struggle with a puzzling disease.
