Paul Le Mat

Paul Le Mat (born September 22, 1945 in Rahway , New Jersey ) is an American actor .

Life

Paul Le Mat moved to California with his family when he was five. After graduating from Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach , he attended various colleges , but without obtaining a degree. He served in the United States Navy in the Vietnam War and also tried his hand at around 15 fights as a welterweight boxer, where he became a multiple regional boxing champion. After an injury that ruined his hopes for a bigger boxing career, he took acting classes in New York, where William Hickey was one of his teachers.

For his first feature American Graffiti , in which he played the rock'n roll fan and car fanatic John Milner , Le Mat received the Golden Globe Award for best young actor in 1973 . Six years later he embodied this role, which also shaped his rebellious image for the following film characters of his, again in The Party is over ... The continuation of American Graffiti . In 1975, Le Mat starred in the male lead in the road movie Two in Blue Jeans , which was one of the most commercially successful films of the year in the United States. With Fleet Sprüche on Kanal 9 (1977) and Melvin and Howard (1980), he also took on leading roles in two early films by director Jonathan Demme . Despite these successes, he was unable to establish himself as a film star permanently. In an interview, Le Mat later stated that he might have been able to become a bigger star, but he never had the ambition and turned down some promising film offers.

From the 1980s onwards, Le Mat was increasingly in front of the camera for television productions. In 1985 he won another Golden Globe for his role in the TV movie The Burning Bed (The Burning Bed) . From the 1990s on, he played mainly in character roles, often for horror films of the B-Class .

Le Mat married the film and television producer Suzanne de Passe (* 1946) in 1978, and the couple, now divorced, has three daughters.
