history

After World War I , the Huntington Beach , Costa Mesa , Newport Beach and Laguna Beach harbor area did not have many students of the appropriate age to attend high school. They were split between high schools in Huntington Beach and Santa Ana . In 1929, after five years of efforts, approval was given to build a new high school on the Costa Mesa border area.

About two months after Black Thursday , 29 December 1929 bought the Irvine Company for 15,000 US dollars (USD) a piece of land with an area of about 81,000 m 2 . The foundation stone was laid on June 14, 1930. As a result of the stock market crash , there were many workers working at low wages, which resulted in the actual school building costing a mere $ 410,000.

The doors of Newport Harbor High School first opened on September 22, 1930, but the school officially opened on January 9, 1931. In the first year the school was attended by 207 students who were taught by 12 teachers. The original construction of the school consisted of the main building, a tower, a wood workshop and a hut that served as a caretaker's apartment. The high tower was built at the time so that people could be made aware of the new school in the region. In the early 1940s, a new math class building was built, named Dodge Hall . It was named after Donald Dodge , who campaigned for the newly created School District to be separated from that in Santa Ana. In 1948 a sports hall was built on the school grounds . In the same year eight barracks of the US Army were converted into classrooms. As the number of students increased, another sports hall was built in 1949 for use by the female students. An open swimming pool was also created on Irvine Avenue . In 1955 another building was built which was used for art classes. Due to the proximity to the harbor that's mascot school Tommy Tar , individualized depiction of Popeye the sailor.

Between 2005 and 2006 generated Newport-Mesa Unified School District by pension funds 282 million USD, of which $ 36 million was invested in the Newport Harbor High School to the school building a 6,500 m 2 to extend large wings.
