Paul Preyer (born March 24, 1847 in Düsseldorf ; † December 18, 1931 there ), was a German painter.

Life

The son of Johann Wilhelm and Emilie Preyer, née Lachenwitz, two years older than his sister Emilie , embarked on an artistic career like her and received initial inspiration and instruction from his father. In 1863, at the age of sixteen, he enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , of which Eduard Bendemann was director. After the preparatory period in the class of antiquities, he switched to the painting class of Karl Ferdinand Sohn , where he learned the basics of painting technology and art. After son resigned his teaching post in 1863, he moved to the private studio of his nephew, Wilhelm Sohn . In November 1867 he moved into his own studio in Düsseldorf, which his father had rented for him.

From 1873 to 1931 Paul Preyer was a member of the Malkasten Artists' Association and in 1894 on its board. The Malkasten archive keeps a caricature drawn by Hans Kohlschein .

In 1883 Paul Preyer married Elise von Beauvais from Düsseldorf (1864–1943); Son Willy - like his father occasionally before - mainly worked as a restorer in Düsseldorf. Paul Preyer died at the age of 84 and was buried in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery.

In 1864 Paul Preyer went public for the first time with a portrait and received benevolent attention: "The portrait is beautifully drawn and painted with a lot of talent and it promises a happy future for the talented young man." Paul Preyer subsequently exhibited other portraits, including that of his father at the easel, that of the engraver Rudolf Stang , a friend of the family, and another of the then famous Belgian composer and cellist Jules de Swert (1843-1891), who in 1865 worked as concertmaster in Düsseldorf until 1868. For a short time, the artist also devoted himself to the subject of still lifes: under the influence of Wilhelm Sohn, he turned to figurative compositions that were used in interiors of the Dutch Baroque and Empire with the attention to detail of the costumes . These included paintings with titles such as Lady on the Terrace Reading a Letter , Elegant Young Lady in a Castle Interior , The Singer at the Lute , A Jeweler or On Birthday Morning , with which he was shown at numerous exhibitions - including in Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Düsseldorf , Hanover and Munich - was represented and found buyers at home and abroad.
