Paul Revere & the Raiders
Paul Revere & the Raiders (from 1971 The Raiders ) was an American rock band .
history
Paul Revere (born January 7, 1938 - October 4, 2014) initially worked as a hairdresser. He later ran his own drive-in restaurant in Boise , Idaho .
Having learned to play the piano and organ as a child , he performed with a small band in his spare time. In the early 1960s he met Mark Lindsay , who delivered bread to Paul's restaurant. Mark became the new lead singer of the band called "Paul Revere & the Raiders". In 1961 the group got a record deal. The debut single was called Like, Long Hair and reached number 38 in the US singles charts .
Because Paul Revere is also the name of a hero of the American Revolutionary War , the band opted for the visual gag of always appearing in uniforms from that era. In the following years the quintet played its way from small clubs in the country to the night clubs of San Francisco . By 1969, the band's releases achieved a number of successes. Then Mark Lindsay decided to try his luck as a soloist. However, he had only modest success and came back to the band in 1971, which was now only called "The Raiders". Paul Revere had withdrawn from the active scene and only did business, while Lindsay was now responsible for artistic matters. In this formation the band had their biggest hit Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian) , which reached number 1 on the music charts in the USA and was the biggest million seller in the record history of Columbia Records with over four million copies sold .
In the mid-1970s, interest in the band's music waned and the group had no further commercial success.
