Paul Erich Riebensahm (born September 7, 1880 in Königsberg , East Prussia, † 1971 ) was a German engineer , manager and university lecturer . He was a board member of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and taught as a professor at the Technical University of Berlin .

Life

Paul Riebensahm was the son of the businessman Gustav Riebensahm and his wife Ida Riebensahm nee. Wilke. After attending the humanistic grammar school in his hometown Königsberg, he studied at the Technical University (Berlin-) Charlottenburg. From 1904 to 1912 he worked as an engineer for the machine factory Weise & Monski in Halle (Saale) . Subsequently he was director and board member of the Eisenach vehicle factory . From 1918 to 1920 he worked for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in Stuttgart and Berlin and from 1920 to 1922 for Neumeyer AG in Munich . In 1922 he was appointed to the Technical University of Berlin and was appointed full professor the following year . He held the chair in mechanical technology ; According to Kürschner, also for industrial sociology . Riebensahm was married twice and had three children.

After the First World War, Paul Riebensahm initiated the first German company newspaper as a board member of DMG . The aim was to develop a “common working language” in order to regain the trust that has been lost between employees and employers and to overcome the gap. The guiding principle "... that man is not there for work's sake, but work for man's sake" reflected Riebensahm's deep conviction. In Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy as editor , Riebensahm found a suitable partner for the Werkzeitung project. At first, Rosenstock-Huessy worked incognito . The Werkzeitung appeared in 19 issues from 1919 to August 1920 and reported on current topics relating to work in the Daimler plants, as well as on topics from the areas of traffic and technology, art and nature, architecture, economy and politics. Above all, however, the newspaper served to involve employees in improving the production process. For example, the rationalization expert Richard Lang commented on the topic of group manufacturing. Half a year after the first issue, a worker spoke up and complained about wasted materials and additional work. We finally got into a dialogue with the employees. This can be seen as an early form of the "Kaizen" established in Japan. The Werkzeitung project came to an abrupt end in August 1920.

Riebensahm devoted himself to new tasks, first in Munich, later in Berlin, where from 1922 to 1945 he headed the Institute for General Mechanical Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. When it was renamed the Technical University of Berlin , the institute was renamed the Institute for Materials Technology in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the forerunner of today's Institute for Materials Science and Technology in Faculty III - Process Sciences. Riebensahm headed the institute from 1945 to 1954.

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehlung + Werkstofftechnik e. V. awards the Paul Riebensahm Prize, endowed with 2,000 euros, every year. Young scientists are honored at the annual hardening congress, an industry get-together for heat treatment.
