Paul Scholz (born October 1, 1859 in Vienna , † December 16, 1940 in Graz ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Paul Scholz, the son of a toy manufacturer , studied from 1875 to 1880 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, among others with Ferdinand Laufberger . He got his first job as a draftsman and composer in Ferdinand Lieb's arts and crafts studio, after which he moved to Robert Scholtz's studio in Budapest , where he specialized in designs for the interior and exterior decorations of new buildings and palaces. From 1882 Scholz worked in Vienna and Trieste as an employee of Ignaz Schönbrunner, who entrusted him with the management of the picturesque decoration of the Teatro Communale and the interior of the representative rooms of the Austro-Hungarian Lloyd in Trieste.

From 1884 to 1915, Scholz taught applied arts forms and technical drawing for artistic embroidery at the Graz School of Applied Arts . He completed further training with Rudolf Hölzel, Bernhard Buttersack and Henry Luyten. Paul Scholz became famous for his interior decorations for buildings in Graz, such as the three murals for the post and telegraph station (1887), the frescoes on the mirror vault of the Aula of the TH (1889) as well as the neo-Gothic wall paintings and the four evangelists in the dome of the central cemetery church (1898). In addition to oil paintings , watercolors and miniatures , his artistic work also includes textile designs for furniture, silk and velvet fabrics.
