Paul Tapponnier (born January 6, 1947 in Annecy ) is a French geologist.

Tapponnier studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris with a degree in 1970. He then went to the Universite du Languedoc in Montpellier and from 1972 to 1975 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1978 he received his doctorate in Montpellier. He was then at the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris in the tectonics department . Since 1985 he has also been a visiting scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and in 2000 he was a visiting professor at Caltech . Since 2009 he has been group leader in tectonics at Nanyang University of Technology in Singapore (EOS, Earth Observatory of Singapore).

Tapponnier was one of the first to recognize the possibilities of satellite exploration ( Landsat ) for tectonics in the 1970s . In particular, he dealt, partly with Peter Molnar from MIT, with the tectonics of Asia, which is mainly characterized by the collision of the Indian plate.

In 1984 he received the CNRS silver medal , in 1985 the Alfred Wegener Medal , in 1990 the Great Science Prize of the City of Paris and in 2001 the Lyell Medal .

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of America (1994) and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (1994). He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2005), the Académie des Sciences and Knight of the Legion of Honor (1991).
