Paul Marie Pierre Thureau-Dangin (born December 14, 1837 in Paris , † February 24, 1913 ) was a French historian and Secrétaire perpétuel of the Académie française .

Life

As a law graduate, Thureau-Dangin worked for the French Conseil d'État , but he was best known for his historical research. His most important work is the three-volume Histoire de la Renaissance catholique en Angleterre au XIX e Siècle ( History of the Catholic Renaissance in England in the 19th Century , 1899–1906). He was also the author of the Histoire de la Monarchie de Juillet ( History of the July Monarchy , 1884) and many other books on the history and religion of France.

Politically, Thureau-Dangin was a liberal Catholic of the second generation after the French Revolution , whose life was marked by the end of the Second Empire and the beginning of the Third French Republic . The devout historian was convinced of the idea of ​​a Catholic Church that suited modernity and the republic and showed great interest in a renewal of Catholicism in Great Britain .

He was elected to the Académie française in 1893 and was its Secrétaire perpétuel.

His son Jean was an MP and Senator of the Third Republic. His son François was an important ancient orientalist . His daughter Marie married the writer Paul Renaudin .
