Paul Turner

Paul Turner (born December 1945 in Cornwall ; † November 1, 2019 ) was a British film director who worked mainly in Wales .

Life

Turner studied at a film school and initially worked as a cameraman and film editor for the broadcaster BBC Cymru Wales . From 1971 to 1982 he was also an editor at the BBC.

In 1981 he made his directorial debut with the short film Trisgel . Various feature films for Welsh television followed, including a film about a lesbian couple with Tra Bo Dwy . In 1992 the biopic Hedd Wyn appeared about the Welsh poet Ellis Humphrey Evans , who became known under the bard name Hedd Wyn and who posthumously won the national Eisteddfod shortly after his death in World War I in 1917 . Hedd Wyn was shot predominantly in Welsh and in 1993 was the first Welsh film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film . Turner won two BAFTA Cymru Awards (Best Welsh Drama, Best Director) for Hedd Wyn in 1994. More feature films followed, especially for the Welsh broadcaster S4C . In 1994, the Fischer Film Almanach counted Turner among those filmmakers who “work socially engaged, make unpretentious films that are realistic and depict the milieu of ordinary people”. Turner learned the Welsh language while working for the BBC in the 1990s.

Turner, who lived in Cardiff , died at the age of 73.
