Paul Wans (born March 31, 1957 in Straelen ) is a German painter , artist and art teacher.

Life

After graduating from the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck , where Franz Joseph van der Grinten was his teacher, Wans studied painting and graphics as well as art history and education from 1975 to 1979 at the University of Duisburg . Since the 2nd state examination in art and art education in 1981 he has lived in Kevelaer and works as a freelance artist and art educator in the secondary school service.

In 1977 and 1978 Wans studied Renaissance painting in Florence and Siena, and on a scholarship at the Oronsko Sculpture and Painting Center near Warsaw, landscape painting. The following year he came second in the 3rd International Watercolor Competition of the Sinaide Ghi Art Foundation in Rome . In 2004 he was awarded the Southwest German Watercolor Prize of the City of Völklingen , and in 2009 the Culture Prize for Fine Arts in the Kleve District (1st prize).

For almost 30 years he has primarily dealt artistically with the agriculture that has shaped the Meuse-Rhine region. Wans is known for his large-format, critical watercolors from the field of agriculture. In them he combines stylistic elements of classic interior and still life painting with those of a heightened, magical realism to create his own painting style. The image and title with which he plays language games usually form a correlate: “Minced beef”, “In one piece or cut?”, “Milk ice cream”, “Last supper before the slaughter”, “Town musicians”, “Stahllstangen”.

Wans has been a member since 1985 and was chairman of the Professional Association of Visual Artists / District Association of the Lower Rhine from 1987 to 1991; In addition, from 2005 he was chairman of the Neuy-Kunst-Verein eV Kevelaer until the association was dissolved in 2013 for the artistic legacy of the Kevelaer Bauhaus and Kandinsky student Heinrich Neuy .

Reviews

Irmgard Bernrieder: “... He pays homage to the uniqueness of cows and sows by depicting them as lifelike as possible using the well-known elaborate watercolor technique. He made the black and white spotted people, whose giant udders tell more about modern production constraints on profitable farms than about rural calm and serenity, his topic early on ... Animal body seems to paint Wans against clichés ... "

Walter Filz: "... Paul Wans succeeds in what modernism has no longer considered possible for almost 100 years: the renewal of landscape painting as agricultural painting .... Animals stand and lie like strange sculptures, foreign bodies in the landscape. ..something that we feed, milk and slaughter, but cannot understand. Especially in their cool, distant lack of emotion, Paul Wans' pictures develop something magical, almost religious, and not only in Kevelaer! "
