Paul Wels

Paul Wels (born  February 2, 1890 in Binnenwalde , Goldap district in East Prussia ; † July 1, 1963 in Offenbach am Main ; full name: Bruno Paul Wilhelm Wels ) was a German pharmacologist and radiation biologist . From 1928 to 1958 he was professor and institute director at the University of Greifswald and was accepted into the Leopoldina in 1938 for his research, which focused on radiation biology . During the Nazi era, he was involved in research on chemical warfare agents, which also included experiments on volunteers.

Life

Paul Wels was born in the East Prussian Binnenwalde in 1890 and, after attending secondary school in Insterburg , studied medicine at the University of Königsberg . He received his doctorate in 1917 with a thesis on the influence of adrenaline on kidney function at the University of Kiel , where he also obtained his habilitation in internal medicine in 1924 . From 1928 he acted as director of the Pharmacological Institute at the University of Greifswald, succeeding Otto Riesser .

After the handover of power to the National Socialists , Paul Wels became a member of the SA in 1933 , and later switched to the NS Air Corps . He was also a member of the NS teacher association and the NSV . During World War II , he worked in personal union at the Institute for General Pharmacology and Defense Toxology of the Berlin Military Medical Academy . Paul Wels' research interests focused in particular on the effects of X-rays on various cells and of ultraviolet radiation on the skin , as well as the pharmacological effects of irradiated substances. His students in Greifswald included Kurt Repke , Peter Holtz and Fritz Markwardt .

Paul Wels was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1938 and was a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin from 1955 . In 1953/1954 he acted as chairman of the German Pharmacological Society, which also made him an honorary member.
