Paul Widmer

Paul Widmer (* 1949 in the canton of St. Gallen ) is a Swiss diplomat and lecturer in international relations at the University of St. Gallen .

Life

Widmer grew up in Toggenburg . He studied history and philosophy in Zurich, where he received his dissertation in 1983 with the uncomfortable reality. Studies on the decline theme in ancient doctorate was. He then spent a year researching with Reinhart Koselleck at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld. In 1977 he joined the Swiss diplomatic service. His first foreign post took him to New York , first to the Consulate General , then to the Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations . In 1979 he was appointed diplomatic assistant to Political Department I at headquarters. From 1983 to 1984 he worked at the Institute for East-West Security Studies in New York, then as Embassy Secretary in Washington. There he was appointed counselor in 1987. From 1989 he headed the CSCE ( OSCE ) service in the Foreign Ministry in Bern and from 1992 to 1999 the Swiss representation in Berlin. In 1999 he became ambassador to Croatia and in 2003 to Jordan . From 2007 he was the permanent representative of Switzerland at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. From late 2011 to early 2014, he was a non-resident ambassador to the Holy See .

In 2014 he published Diplomacy: A Handbook to Introduce Future Diplomats to Their Work . The handbook encompasses the history, theory and practice of diplomacy, which Widmer describes as “power politics in a civil form”.

The cultural foundation of the major bank UBS recognized him as an essayist in 2002 . Since 2016 he has been writing a column as a guest columnist in the NZZ am Sonntag . He lives in Bern.
