Paul Wittmann (born October 22, 1900 in Temeskeresztes ( German  Kreuzstätten ), Kingdom of Hungary , Austria-Hungary ; † January 28, 1985 in Timișoara , Socialist Republic of Romania ) was a Romanian-German church musician and composer .

Life

Wittmann attended the teacher training institute in Großwardein and then became cantor at the Catholic Church in Timisoara - Elisabethstadt . Since there was no organ in this church, he later moved to the Millennium Church , where a large organ built by Carl Leopold Wegenstein in 1901 was available to him. In addition, he was secretary of the Timişoara Philharmonic Society , whose archives were hidden after 1948 in the organ loft of the Millernium Church.

Wittmann edited numerous works for the performance with his church choir and orchestra and composed, among other things, a song in honor of St. Joseph, In Festo Sancti Corporis Christi , a Christmas carol and, with Hans Weisz, the song St. Gerhard, pious man of God . As a musician, he also performed works by contemporary composers such as Dezső Antalffy-Zsiross and Guido von Pogatschnigg . In 1972 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. honored with the Cross of Honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .
