Paul Woenne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Woenne (born September 29, 1880 in Gotha , † September 12, 1952 in Solingen ) was a German arts and crafts teacher .

Life

Paul Woenne comes from a family of craftsmen from Gotha. From 1896 to 1900 he, who admired the lithographer Alois Senefelder , himself trained in this profession. He then worked in his hometown as a volunteer at the Carl Hellfahrt Lithographic Art Institute . From 1902 to 1907 he attended the handicraft and arts and crafts school in Barmen , studied lithography with Hugo Steiner-Prag and Ernst Bornemann and eventually became a teacher at this school himself for a year.

On April 1, 1908, Woenne switched to the technical college for metal design in Solingen as an arts and crafts teacher for drawing and design , where he was to teach for over 40 years. In 1922 he was awarded the title of professor . In 1933 he designed the SA honor dagger on behalf of Adolf Hitler . This was modeled on a Swiss dagger from the 16th century, which can be seen in the painting The Ambassadors by Hans Holbein the Younger . In 1939 he was in charge of the design and manufacture of the lavish cover of the city of Solingen's Golden Book , which has been lost since the Second World War . He marked his work with a sword, crowned with a "W".

Woenne, who was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund , saw his major task in leading the cutlery industry in Solingen to a modern and material-appropriate design, which should replace the traditional Rococo and Baroque forms . The objects he selected were successfully exhibited at the 1922 trade show in Munich , the Rhineland Millennium Celebration in Cologne in 1925 , the Reich Exhibition of Creative People in Düsseldorf in 1937 and at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 , and received numerous awards. In addition, he achieved the inclusion of Solingen products in the catalog "German goods knowledge", in which only exemplary and technically perfect industrial products were included.

On Woeene's initiative, the technical school's sample collection was expanded into the Blade Museum , the forerunner of the German Blade Museum . Even after his retirement, he personally took care of buying and maintaining the exhibits. In addition, he was the shop steward of the Germanic National Museum for the Solingen district and looked after other collections, such as the collection of paintings by Robert Engels .

Woenne's students included the cutlery designer Carl Pott , the Cologne painter Olga Blumenberg , the Solingen artists Alfred Hackländer , Lies Ketterer and Willi Deutzmann, and the painter and graphic artist Willy Schürmann . In 1919 Woenne was one of the founders of the Solingen Artists' Association .

In 1981 the technical school handed Woenne's estate to the Solingen city archive, which was distributed to the city library, blade museum and city archive. In the German Blade Museum you can see a bust of Paul Woenne, which was created by the artist Gertrud Kortenbach .
