Paul Wolfgang Merkel (* 1. April 1756 in Nuremberg , † 16th January 1820 ibid) was a merchant and market chief and the first deputy of the city of Nuremberg in the Second Chamber of the Bavarian Parliament 's 1819 .

Paul Wolfgang Merkel is one of the most important personalities in Nuremberg around 1800: as a businessman he acted with great success, as a politician he implemented reforms, in the Bavarian state parliament he fought for the economic recovery of Nuremberg, as a collector he saved numerous Nuremberg works of art. PW Merkel is a key figure in the upheaval around 1800 and the transition from Nuremberg to the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was a member of the Nuremberg Freemasons Lodge on the three arrows .

From his rich economic and cultural work he left behind an important collection, which today is largely in the fund of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . This collection formed the basis for the Paul Wolfgang Merkel'sche Family Foundation. The family council is responsible for managing the foundation.

Another significant legacy is a large family with 13 children and over 1736 offspring in the 9th generation (as of April 2005). One of his sons-in-law is Friedrich von Roth .

On the occasion of the 250th birthday anniversary on April 1, 2006, the City of Nuremberg, with the support of the City Archives and the Paul Wolfgang Merkel'schen Family Foundation, dedicated an exhibition to the deserving citizen under the name Paul Wolfgang Merkel - Kaufmann.Reformer.Patriot. in the Stadtmuseum Fembohaus .
