Paula Dean Kranz Broadwell (born November 9, 1972 in Bismarck , North Dakota ) is an American journalist and anti-terrorism expert. The discovery of an extramarital affair with David Petraeus , the former head of the International Protection Force in Afghanistan ISAF , led to his resignation as director of the CIA on November 9, 2012 .

Broadwell born Kranz grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota, and attended high school there.

In 1995 Broadwell graduated from West Point Military Academy . She studied at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver , the University of Amman and received a Masters in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . She also participated in the Ph.D. program of the Department of War Studies at King's College London .

job and career

Broadwell served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserves and became Lieutenant Colonel of the Reserve in August 2012 . She was vice-director of the Jebsen Center for Anti-terrorism studies of Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University and worked for the Joint Terrorism Task Force of the FBI .

She also wrote reports and analyzes for the New York Times , the Boston Globe and Time magazine, among others . She worked as an embedded journalist in Afghanistan during the war . Among other things, she reported on the village of Tarok Kolache , which was completely destroyed by an attack by US forces in 2010. In January 2012, the Petraeus biography All In: The Education of General David Petraeus was published, which Broadwell co-authored with Vernon Loeb.

Paula Broadwell is married to a doctor and has two children. They got to know each other during joint military service in Germany. Broadwell lives in Dilworth, a borough of Charlotte .

In November 2012, Broadwell's affair with Petraeus became known after the FBI investigated threatening emails from Broadwell to the Petraeus friends, Jill Kelley, who had contacted the FBI. The motive was jealousy, as Broadwell suspected Kelley of having intentions on the general. Jill Kelley, the wife of a surgeon in Tampa, who organized lady parties for the US Army as a society lady , was also involved in a high-profile affair with the successor of Petraeus in Afghanistan, General John R. Allen .

Broadwell and Petraeus are said to have met in 2006 when he gave a lecture at the Kennedy School in Harvard. Broadwell was doing her master's there and is said to have spoken to him. To research his biography, she moved to Afghanistan for around a year , where Petraeus was the commander in chief of the ISAF.

David Petraeus resigned from the post of director of the CIA for private reasons a few days after the 2012 US presidential election in the wake of the Petraeus affair named after him . His resignation was accepted by US President Obama on November 9, 2012.

In November 2012, Broadwell's home was searched by the FBI after she was suspected of obtaining and disclosing classified information from Petraeus. In a speech to the University of Denver in late October 2012, she claimed that al Qaeda terrorists had stormed the US consulate in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 (which led to the assassination of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and several people accompanying him) in order to get there Liberate detained Libyan militiamen, denied by the CIA.
