Paula Philippson
Paula Philippson (born March 9, 1874 in Berlin ; † July 21, 1949 in Basel ) was a German pediatrician and religious scholar .
Life
Paula Philippson came from a Jewish family of scholars. Her father was the doctor Moritz Philippson (1833–1877), her mother his cousin Meta Philippson.
Since she could not start studying as a woman in Germany, she studied medicine at the University of Zurich . She was only able to study in Germany after a change in legislation. She went to the universities of Strasbourg , Freiburg and Breslau , where she obtained her license to practice medicine in 1903 and her doctorate in 1904 . In 1907 Philippson settled in Frankfurt am Main as a pediatrician .
She came to study the ancient history of religion through a stay in Rome (1921). Then there were the suggestions of her uncle, the geographer Alfred Philippson . Since, as a Jew, she was no longer allowed to practice as a pediatrician from 1933, she devoted herself entirely to her research. From 1933 to 1938 she made several trips to Greece.
After the November pogroms in 1938 , Philippson fled to Switzerland and settled in Basel in 1939, where she spent the last ten years of her life as a private scholar. She tried in vain to have her uncle Alfred released from the Theresienstadt ghetto .
Paula Philippson's work dealt with the Greek religion in the context of geography and topography. This innovative research approach was taken up and further developed in religious studies. Although she had no prior archaeological or philological training, Philippson's work met with a positive response in the academic world.
