Paulo Afonso Santos Júnior , called Paulão (born May 6, 1982 in Lagoa Santa (Minas Gerais) ) is a Brazilian soccer player who has been under contract with the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla since 2012 .
Career
Paulão began his career at the local club Atlético Mineiro , for which he was active in the youth department and for two years as a professional. He then moved to the neighboring club América Mineiro , for which he was active for only one year. After six months at SE Gama , Paulão made the leap to Europe, which, like many other professionals, took him to Portugal . There he signed with Naval 1º de Maio , where he was set as a central defender in the next three seasons and completed 84 missions for the club during this time.
Through his performances Paulão aroused the interest of other Portuguese clubs, so that in the summer of 2009 the league rival Sporting Braga signed him . There he came to his first appearances on an international level when the team in the Europa League failed in the third qualifying round at IF Elfsborg . In the further course of the season Paulão came on seven league appearances and was part of the fact that Braga finished the season with second place and the best result of the season in its history. In the course of this, the club took part in qualifying for the Champions League and later failed as third in the group stage. Sporting Braga continued the season in the Europa League , where the team only lost to FC Porto in the final .
After 19 league appearances in the 2010/11 season for Sporting Braga, he did not extend his expiring contract and signed a three-year contract with the French first division club AS Saint-Étienne .
After ten appearances in the first half of the 2011/12 season, he moved to the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla in winter 2012 .
