Lagoa Santa , officially Portuguese Município de Lagoa Santa , is a municipality on the inland lake of the same name in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It is a popular excursion destination and around 35 km away from the capital Belo Horizonte . As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated at 64,527 inhabitants, who are called Lagoa-Santenser ( lagoa-santenses ) and live on a municipal area of around 229.4 km². Lagoa Santa is part of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area .

The Danish natural scientist Peter Wilhelm Lund discovered rich fossils in the nearby limestone caves around 1840 , but above all human skeletal remains. The estimated dating to 11,000 BC. Chr. Cannot be verified due to the loss of the found material. Later finds, especially that of Luzia (not to be confused with the African Lucy ), in the same area, however, corroborate the date. The Lund finds are the beginning of research in Brazil on the colonization of South America, which was carried out independently of that of North America from the Pacific region.
