The Protestant Paulskirche (Église Saint-Paul) is a neo-Gothic sacred building in Strasbourg in the Neustadt , the so-called "German Quarter". Due to its spectacular location on the southern tip of the northern Ill island of Sainte-Hélène (Saint Helena) in the middle of the widest part of the river, the church is one of the most photographed subjects in the city.

history

The church was built from 1892 to 1897 by the architect Louis Muller (1842–1898) as a Protestant garrison church. While the facade of the two 76 meter high towers and the color selection of the stone used fro on the Marburg Elisabethenkirche oriented, the overall system corresponds to (large width relatively small length, a total of 19 [!] Inputs) to the needs of one of military all rankings attended church service. The nave ( vault height : 20 m) was originally supposed to have four yokes and be around five meters longer, but due to unforeseen technical difficulties that had arisen during the construction of the foundations and which had increased the costs, the Latin cross was planned Build a Greek cross . In 1919, with the return of Alsace to France, the building was given to a civil parish of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Alsace and Lorraine ( EPRAL ). The church was damaged by British and American bombs in 1944 and by a hail storm on August 11, 1958 .

Organs

The two organs are remarkable in terms of equipment . The main organ from the workshop of Eberhard Friedrich Walcker is one of the largest in a wide area with its 240 cubic meters and its number of registers expanded to 76 in 1934 . The organ by Marc Garnier , which was built into the former imperial hall in 1976, is considered by experts to be both aesthetically and sonically successful.
