Paulus Wörndl (civil August Wörndl ; born August 20, 1894 in Itzling near Salzburg , † June 26, 1944 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was an Austrian Catholic religious priest and opponent of National Socialism .

Life

Wörndl entered the Carmelite Order in Graz in 1913 and made his vows in 1914. After a theology and philosophy studies at the University of Vienna he received in 1919 at St. Stephen's Cathedral , the ordination . In 1925 he became vicar and in 1930 parish administrator in the new branch of the Carmelites St. Josef in St. Pölten . In 1938 he was appointed head of the Carmelite Convention in Linz and at the same time pastor of the Linz Carmelite Church .

On July 6, 1943, Wörndl was arrested by the Gestapo on the basis of his correspondence with a member of an Austro-Norwegian resistance organization, and sentenced to death on April 18, 1944 for high treason and undermining military strength . On June 26, 1944, Wörndl died in the Brandenburg prison from the guillotine.
