Paulus de Santa Maria (also: Paulus von Burgos , Latin Paulus Burgensis , actually: Schlomo ben Jitzchaq ha-Levi (שלמה הלוי מבורגוס); * around 1352 in Burgos ; † August 29, 1435 ibid) was a late medieval theologian and exegete of Jewish Origin. From 1403 to 1415 he was Bishop of Cartagena , from 1415 until his death Bishop of Burgos .

Live and act

Schlomo ben Jitzchaq ha-Levi, the son of a wealthy merchant family in the Jewish faith, initially worked as a rabbi in his hometown before converting to the Catholic faith with some of his siblings and family members from 1390 to 1391 . Since his baptism he called himself Pablo García de Santa María in Spanish and Paulus de Santa Maria in Latin .

Paul then studied theology in Paris , was ordained a priest there in 1394 and then went to the court of the Avignon antipope Benedict XIII. As Bishop of Cartagena, Paul belonged to the circle of advisors who led the reign of the underage King John II of Castile and León , and was appointed Chancellor of Castile by the regent King Ferdinand I of Aragón in 1407 . During this time he influenced, among other things, the Jewish legislation in Castile. In 1415 he was made bishop of his hometown Burgos. He was buried in 1435 in the Dominican monastery of San Pablo di Burgos, which he founded there .
