The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice , in Slovak Univerzita Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach (UPJŠ), is a university in the Slovak city of Košice .
history
The Old University of Košice was founded on August 6th, 1660 by Emperor Leopold I with the Golden Bull of the University of Košice, which turned the Jesuit monastery school , which had been built by Bishop Benedikt Kišdy just a few years earlier, into one of the few universities of the Habsburgs at the time Made monarchy.
In 1773 the Jesuit University was nationalized as Academia Regia and as a result of a subsequent university reform, the university's facilities became a branch of the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest . The law school became independent in 1850 and existed until 1921.
It was not until 1959 that the University of Košice was restored by merging several higher education institutions as Pavol-Jozef-Šafárik University Košice. It is named after the Slovak writer and philologist Pavol Jozef Šafárik .
In 1996, the philosophical and pedagogical faculties, which are located in the neighboring town of Prešov , split off from the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University and have since formed the University of Prešov .
