Pavol Peter Gojdič OSBM (* July 17, 1888 in Ruské Pekľany near Prešov ; † July 17, 1960 in Leopoldov , Czechoslovakia ) was Greek Catholic Bishop of Prešov from 1927 until his death in 1960 and was appointed on November 4, 2001 by Pope John Paul II beatified .

Pavol Peter Gojdič received on August 11, 1911 by Bishop Ján Vályi the ordination for the eparchy Prešov . On January 27, 1923 he was accepted into the religious order of the Basilians of St. Josaphat incardinated .

On September 14, 1926 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Prešov Eparchy. On March 7, 1927, Pope Pius XI appointed him . as titular bishop of Harpasa . The bishop of Križevci , Dionisije Njaradi , donated him episcopal consecration on March 25th of the same year. Co - consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic for the Ukrainian Greek Catholics in the United States, Constantine Bohacewskyi , and the Bishop of Przemyśl-Sambir and Sanok , Josaphat Kocylovskyj OSBM. It was not until April 11, 1940 that Gojdič became a regular diocesan bishop of Prešov.

Gojdič was the only Slovak bishop to publicly protest against the Holocaust during World War II . In addition, he had hundreds of Jews pro forma baptized to save them from genocide. In 2008, Bishop Gojdič was posthumously awarded the Righteousness Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial .

After the communist seizure of power in Czechoslovakia , Gojdič was arrested in 1950 along with his auxiliary bishop Vasiľ Hopko and other Greek Catholic clergy who opposed the oppression of their church by the state.

A show trial was conducted against Gojdič and the Catholic bishops Ján Vojtaššák and Michal Buzalka , during which he was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 1951. After years of martyrdom in captivity, Gojdič died on his 72nd birthday in Leopoldov's prison hospital .
