Pedras Doladas
The giant grave of Pedras Doladas is located on the eponymous hill, about 1.5 km east of Scano di Montiferro in the province of Oristano in Sardinia . Immediately to the south is the "Tutti i Santi" (All Saints' Day) chapel, which was built in 1966.
The giant tomb has been known since the 1850s. The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” and ( Italian Tombe dei Giganti - plur.) In Sardu are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), which is a precursor to the Nuragic culture .
Type sequence
Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a square facade, significantly raised in the middle, made of processed and layered stone blocks. The giant tomb of Pedras Doladas is a transition type with elements of the younger (with square facade) and older type (portal stele).
description
The symmetrical complex is built with dry masonry made from local basalt . The axial body enclosing the gallery is 8.40 m long. Its width in the area of the connection with the exedra is 5.6 m and tapers to 4.20 m towards the apse , which is only rounded in the outer wall area . The thickness of the double walls is 1.9 m on the sides and 2.9 m in the middle of the apse. The interior of the slightly trapezoidal gallery is 5.4 m long and 0.85 to 0.8 m wide. It is limited laterally by six orthostats and a high end stone. The superstructure, possibly consisting of a cantilever vault or a horizontal panel covering, is missing, as are the sides of the exedra. However, traces of a superior bank have been preserved at its base. The axial access is represented by two aligned stands, on which a fall may have rested. However, they have wide grooves on the inside into which a portal stele was apparently inserted.
The memorial includes three conical, stocky baityloi , two of which were incorporated into the modern boundary wall. The third, a small conical shape with a flat elliptical and a convex section, lies between the blocks of the apse.
Nearby
A few hundred meters away are the nuraghi Porcos and Altoriu. The giant tombs Amenta, Pedriscudu, Sas serras and Su crastu iscrittu are close to the place.
