Pedro Luís Pereira de Sousa
Pedro Luís Pereira de Sousa (born December 13, 1839 in Araruama , † July 16, 1884 in Bananal ) was a Brazilian lawyer, politician, speaker, journalist and poet, who is counted among the condorists . Politically, he held several ministerial offices and was President of the Bahia Province.
Life
Sousa, also known only as Pedro Luís , was born in Araruama in the Rio de Janeiro province of the Brazilian Empire, the son of Luis Pereira de Sousa and Carlota Viterbo de Sousa. He received schooling at the Colégio de São Vicente de Paulo in Nova Friburgo , where he made the acquaintance of Casimiro de Abreu , who later became known as the "poet of slaves". He studied law at the Faculdade de Direito do Largo de São Francisco and graduated in 1860, whereupon he settled as a lawyer in Rio de Janeiro .
He had joined the Partido Liberal , a second party alongside the conservatives . Between 1864 and 1866 and 1878 and 1881 he was a member of the German Empire for two legislative periods, where he made a name for himself as a speaker. Sousa was first foreign minister under Emperor Peter II , then minister of transport and agriculture until 1881. In 1882 he was appointed president (governor) of the province of Bahia for the first time and again within the year 1882 to 1884. He was still aiming for a seat in the senate , but died at the age of 44.
He was awarded the Order of the Rose (Grand Dignitar) and in 1880 was given the title of Imperial Councilor ( conselheiro do Império ).
Posthumously he was named after the chair 31 of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) in honor of his poetic work. Together with Tobias Barreto , the founder of Condorismo , Castro Alves and Joaquim de Sousa Andrade , he belonged to this third phase of Brazilian literary romanticism . José Veríssimo remarked to him (abbreviated here): “He left behind half a dozen poems, the best in an epic tone ('Os voluntários da morte', 'Terribilis Dea'), which all of Brazil knew, recited and admired.” He continues with "... it is not enough to secure it a first class place in our poetry".
