Pedro Sampaio Malan (born February 19, 1943 in Petrópolis , state of Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian economist and former finance minister of the country. He is chairman of the board of directors of Unibanco .

Life

Pedro Sampaio Malan was born in northern Rio de Janeiro in 1943. Before studying engineering at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro , he attended a Jesuit school .

As a research assistant at the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (Ipea) in Rio de Janeiro , he made the acquaintance of the US economist Albert Fishlow , under whom he received his doctorate in economics at the University of California in 1973 on Brazil in international economics .

Malan continued to live in the United States and worked for various agencies through 1993.

Central bank

Malan returned to Brazil in 1993 at the request of Finance Minister Fernando Henrique Cardoso and headed the Central Bank of Brazil from September 9, 1993 to December 31, 1994. He was succeeded as head of the central bank by Gustavo Franco .

Finance minister

From January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2002, Malan headed Cardoso's old ministry under the presidency. Together with Marcílio Marquez Moreira and Fernando Collor de Mello , he led the negotiations on Brazil's debt with the International Monetary Fund ( IMF ) and played a key role in the Plano Real . His successor as finance minister was Antonio Palocci .

Unibanco

Malan is chairman of the board of directors of the third largest bank in Brazil, Unibanco .
