Pehlivanköy is a Turkish city and capital of the district of the same name .

Geographical location

The city is located in the province of Kırklareli in Eastern Thrace , about 50 km southwest of the provincial capital Kırklareli . The Turkish name means "Ringerdorf".

history

The historical name Pavli (Bulgarian: Pavulo) is derived from the Greek name Agios Pavlos (Αγιος Παυλος). The place was founded by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III. founded. Pehlivanköy was long a Christian religious center under the name Pavulo. After the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–78 , Muslim families from the Balkans settled here.

According to the city seal, the place was raised to a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1948 .

traffic

The city has had a rail connection since 1873, when the corresponding section of the Istanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad railway was opened. The city's station of the same name became the separation station in 1971 when the newly built direct line to Bulgaria , which branches off the historic line here, was opened. After the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, Western Thrace, and with it most of the section west of Pythio, fell to Greece .
