Pelé , real name Pedro Miguel Cardoso Monteiro (born May 2, 1978 in Albufeira ), is a Portuguese football player . From 2007 to 2009 the defender was under contract with the English first division side West Bromwich Albion .
Career
society
Pelé started his career at Imortal DC before moving to the then Portuguese second division club SC Farense after five years . After their relegation to the third division had been determined, the defensive player decided on another transfer and signed for the 2003/04 season with the capital club Belenenses Lisbon . At Belenenses Pelé made his first division debut on August 23, 2003 in a 2: 4 against Sporting Lisbon . Over time he played his way into the starting line-up and developed into a top performer. On March 6, 2005, he scored his only league goal for Belenenses in a 1-0 win over local rivals Sporting.
On July 19, 2006 Pelé signed a contract with Southampton FC and moved to the English Football League Championship . On December 30, 2006, he scored his first goal for the Saints against Leicester City . In the course of the season Pele moved from the center of defense to midfield and formed a defensive block there together with Jermaine Wright . Because of the injuries of Darren Powell and Claus Lundekvam at the end of the season, the trained defender was pulled back into the defense. On August 9, 2008 it was announced that Pele would move to West Bromwich Albion after a year at Southampton for £ 1 million . On the first day of the 2007/08 season he made his debut for the Baggies against Burnley FC . After a year at West Bromwich, promotion to the Premier League was certain. His first game in England's top division was Pelé on January 17, 2009 against FC Middlesbrough . He came on for Leon Barnett in the 39th minute . The game was won 3-0.
In the summer of 2009, his contract with West Brom was not renewed. Pelé was without a club for a few months before joining FC Falkirk in the Scottish Premier League . There he was a regular in the 2009/10 season before he was seriously injured at the end of January 2010 and was out until the end of the season. In August 2010 he first moved to the Milton Keynes Dons , before joining Northwich Victoria in the Northern Premier League , the seventh English division, a few weeks later . In early 2012, Hayes & Yeading United signed him , who played in the Conference National (fifth tier). At the end of the season he was relegated with his team. In March 2013, Pelé moved to Havant & Waterlooville FC within Conference South . He played there until the summer of 2016, but was rarely used in the last two seasons. In summer 2016 he moved to AFC Totton in the eighth division.
National team
Even before 2006, Pelé was nominated several times for the national team of Cape Verde . However, he repeatedly refused. Only when he was called back into the squad for qualifying for the 2008 African Cup of Nations did the defender accept.
