Pelargonium luridum belonging to the genus Pelargonium within the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). The species was first described by Andrews in 1805 as Geranium luridum .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species grows as a geophyte with a woody, underground tuber, very short shoots and reaches heights of growth of up to 100 centimeters during the flowering period. The leaves on a single plant can be very variable. The first leaves are shallowly lobed to pinnate or double pinnate. The later leaves are cut much deeper and provided with narrower segments. The stipules are linaelisch shaped to triangular.

Generative characteristics

The unbranched inflorescence bears 5 to 60 individual flowers. The flower cup is very long. The five, pale pink, yellow, white or red (only found in Mozambique and Angola) colored petals are spatulate and almost the same size. The top two are sanded out. There are seven fertile stamens .

Occurrence

Pelargonium luridum occurs in the African countries Zaire , Zambia , Malawi , Tanzania , Angola , Mozambique , Swaziland , Zimbabwe and in South Africa , with the exception of the western provinces.

Taxonomy

The first description was in 1805 by Henry Charles Andrews . Robert Sweet placed the species in the genus Pelargonium in 1824 .

Synonyms are Polyactium aconitiphyllum Eckl. & Zeyh. (1836), Pelargonium aconitiphyllum (Eckl. & Zeyh.) Steud. (1841), Pelargonium angulosum Szyszyl. (1888), Pelargonium heckmannianum Engl. (1902) and many others. Since the species is very variable, it is assumed that there are several taxa.

The species belongs to the Polyactium DC section . It is rated “Least Concern” in the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in South Africa.
