Pellegrina
The pellegrina is the shoulder collar worn with a cassock , open at the front and worn by Catholic clergymen.
features
The Pellegrina is a short shoulder cape similar to the Mozzetta , but open at the front. It reaches to the elbow. The fabrics are black or white, lined with amaranth red (bishops) or cardinal red ( cardinals ) hems. The Pope's pellegrina is completely white. Some priests wear a black pellegrina.
use
As a rule, the pellegrina is worn with the cassock in the Roman Catholic Church by bishops and cardinals.
In 1850, Pius IX. re-established the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. His instructions were understood to mean that he granted all priests the privilege of wearing a replica of his own white cassock with Pellegrina in black. Since then, the robe with pellegrina and cassock has been the hallmark of all Catholic priests in England , Wales , Scotland , Ireland , Australia and New Zealand .
In 1909, John Abel Felix Prosper Nainfa, in his book Costume of Prelates of the Catholic Church , suggested the English word simar instead of cassock for this particular combination, which is usually tightly sewn . However, this designation is controversial.
When Benedict XVI. Resigning in 2013, he decided to continue wearing the white cassock, but without the Pellegrina.
