Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi is a cichlid endemic tothe Wouri river basin in West African Cameroon .

features

Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi is a relatively small species of cichlid, the largest specimen examined for the first description was 6 cm long. The head and body are light brown to gray-brown, with the back slightly darker. At the end of the gill cover there is a dark spot with blue iridescent edges. The upper lip is orange-brown or brownish, the lower lip gray-brown. The throat and Branchiostegalmembranen are light yellow. Stressed, suppressed or brood-caring animals sometimes show a dark vertical stripe at the level of the lower sideline . The pectoral fins are transparent to light yellow.

The fish show a clear sexual dimorphism . In the males, the dorsal fin is light yellow to brownish, has a red border and the upper two thirds of the fin rays are bluish-white in color. There are some bluish spots on the back of the dorsal fin. The anal fin is yellow and has a dark edge. The front edge of the reddish to light purple ventral fins is bluish, the first soft ray is gray or blackish. As with the dorsal fin, there are some bluish spots in the back. The caudal fin is reddish and shows 4 to 7 rows of blue dots, which are more pronounced in the lower section of the caudal fin than in the upper area. The upper half of the caudal fin has a white border, underneath is a dark stripe followed by another blue and white stripe. The lower areas of the gill cover and the chest are light yellow. The scales have dark edges.

The dorsal fin of the females is iridescent yellow with a black border, underneath in some specimens there is a bluish stripe. The first two fin rays and the membrane between them are black. In some specimens there are one or two black spots in the soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is yellow with a bluish tinge and in some specimens with one or two dark spots in the upper half and a translucent dark gray or blackish edge. The anal fin is yellow with a light blue fin base and a dark gray to black border. The pelvic fins are reddish or dark purple and have a black front edge. The lower areas of the gill cover are yellow; the breast is whitish. The belly up to the middle of the body is reddish.

habitat

The Terra typica of Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi is a tributary of the Wouri near the village of Yabassi . It is 4 to 8 meters wide, 40 to 130 cm deep during the dry season and then has a visibility under water of about 1.2 to 1.5 meters. The bottom of the water consists of sand that is partially covered by fallen leaves and in some places by stones and sunken tree trunks and branches. In some areas there are populations of the broad-leaved hook lily ( Crinum natans ) and the water fern Bolbitis heudelotti . The banks have dense populations of the spear leaf species Anubias barteri and are partially shaded by the dense rainforest. Companion fish are the tooth carp Chromaphyosemion riggenbachi and Epiplatys infrafasciatus , a light-eyed fish ( Procatopus sp.), The barbel Enteromius camptacanthus and the tetra Brycinus cf. longipinnis . In February 2009 a water temperature of 27 ° C, a pH value of 7.3 and a conductivity of 24.6 μS were measured on the Terra typica .

Systematics

The species was discovered by Otto Gartner in February 1984 and was known as an aquarium fish for several decades under the name Pelvicachromis taeniatus "Wouri". It was first described in 2014 by the Austrian ichthyologist Anton Lamboj and two colleagues as part of a revision of the Pelvicachromis taeniatus species complex and named after the aquarist and former president of the German Cichlid Society Ernst-Otto von Drachenfels.
