The Pembina River is a right tributary of the Athabasca River in Central Alberta ( Canada ).

The name Pembina [ ˈpɛmbɪnə ] was derived from the Canadian-French name for the shrub Viburnum trilobum . The river in turn gave its name to the Pembina oil field , an oil and gas producing region around Drayton Valley . The environmental institute Pembina Institute also took its name from the river.
