Drayton Valley is a city in central Alberta about 130 kilometers southwest of Edmonton and the capital of Brazeau County . The village is located on Alberta Highway 22, which connects Mayerthorpe via Calgary with Lundbreck. The North Saskatchewan River runs east of Drayton Valley .
history
The first settlement took place in 1907 by woodcutters. Until 1953, Drayton Valley lived mainly from agriculture, the fur trade and the timber industry . On February 23, 1953, an oil well was discovered. The oil field became the largest in North America. The find raised the population from 75 to 2000 that year. The oil industry has invested more than 900 million Canadian dollars and over 70 companies drilled for oil in Drayton Valley. Due to its population growth, the place was declared a village in February 1956. By incorporating the two villages of Lodgepole and Cynthia, Drayton Valley was granted town charter on February 7, 1957.
Infrastructure, culture, sights
The road network of Drayton Valley runs in a network around the two north-south and east-west running in and out roads (50 Avenue).
Drayton Valley is home to a small local museum that shows the history of the place and its surroundings.
The city has a multi-purpose sports hall Omniplex , which is used for ice hockey , ringettes and curling . In addition, football - baseball - and rodeo events possible.
There are five public and two Catholic schools and 13 churches of different faiths in Drayton Valley.
About 7 kilometers north of the center is the Drayton Valley International Airport .
Sports
The Drayton Valley Thunder has been a member of the Alberta Junior Hockey League since 1998 .
