Pembroke [ ˈpɛmbɹʊk ] (Wal. Penfro ) is a Flemish town founded in the Middle Ages at the entrance to the Milford Haven estuary in south Wales . Pembroke was originally the capital of the county of Pembrokeshire and has 7,214 inhabitants (as of 2001).

history

The older Pembroke, incorporated by Royal Charter in 1090 , is built along a narrow limestone ridge and was surrounded by a city wall. The Pembroke Castle towering at the western end of the city, built by Arnulf de Montgomery and dominating the Haven area, was the seat of the Counts of Pembroke in the 12th and 13th centuries. Heinrich Tudor, who later became Henry VII , was born here in 1457 .

Although the castle was something of an outpost at the time, the strategic importance of the location was enough to justify further strengthening of the complex in the first 150 years. The first stone extensions go back to the middle of the 13th century. The city wall also dates from this time.

Pembroke as seen from the castle

In the English Civil War , Pembroke became known when the mayor John Poyer sided with the royalists in 1648 despite the majority of local support for Parliament. Together with a group of sympathizers, he occupied the castle - already a formidable festival at the time - and only gave up after Oliver Cromwell's troops had fired the city with artillery and caused great damage.

economy

In the Middle Ages, the textile manufacturing introduced by the Flemish immigrants brought the city a period of prosperity, which ended before the 16th century.

The first offshoots of the Industrial Revolution , which mainly traveled to rural Great Britain by rail, reached Pembroke in 1863 with the opening of the rail link to Tenby . A few years later, other lines belonging to the Great Western Railway were added.

Today Pembroke is mainly a market town and a tourist center close to the attractions of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and a number of other destinations such as the resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot , the villages of Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven , the castles of Manorbier Castle and Carew Castle , the beaches on the coast, the The market town of Narberth , the scenic Haven Waterway and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path .

The largest combined cycle power plant in Great Britain was built in Pembroke . The power plant, which officially went into operation on September 19, 2012 after a construction period of over three years, was built by RWE npower and RWE Technology for over 800 million euros and has an output of over 2000 MW. It consists of five identical blocks. The gas turbines are of the GT26 type from Alstom , formerly Asea Brown Boveri (ABB Ltd) . The power plant has an efficiency of around 60% and is one of the most efficient in Great Britain. It is cooled with water from the Milford Haven Waterway. There is also a Valero Energy refinery that employs 1400 workers (as of 2011).
