Giuseppe Penone (born April 3, 1947 in Garessio , Italy ) is an Italian artist.

life and work

Penone currently lives and works in Turin , and also teaches at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is considered a representative of Arte Povera , his installations and objects are mostly objects and materials from nature.

In 1972 Giuseppe Penone took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies : Self-Presentation - Exhibits department and also represented works at Documenta 7 (1982) and Documenta 8 in 1987. In 1989 he was nominated for the Turner Prize , in 2001 he was awarded the Rolf Schock Prize and in October 2014 he received the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo .

In 2004 the Center Georges Pompidou dedicated a retrospective to him. On 27 May 2010 Giuseppe Penone was the first participant taking place in 2012 dOCUMENTA (13) announced in June of the same year Penones work Idee di Pietra (Ideas of Stone) was the first artwork of dOCUMENTA (13) in the Kassler Karlsaue close inaugurated the orangery . The approximately 9 meter high bronze sculpture, which refers to the planting action 7000 oaks by Joseph Beuys , represents a leafless tree whose branches have been cut off and a large granite boulder appears to have got caught in the branches . At the foot of the bronze tree, Penone planted a small holly , which is said to have reached a stately size at the opening of the next documenta. The sculpture was bought from donations from citizens of Kassel.

In the park of the Reggia di Venaria Reale near Turin, the Giardino delle Sculture Fluide was created with some of his sculptures.

In 2014 he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale . Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature on February 26, 2019 .
