Pentti Saarikoski

Pentti Saarikoski (born September 2, 1937 in Impilahti , † August 24, 1983 in Joensuu ) was a Finnish writer .
Life
Saarikoski published two volumes of poetry in 1958, and a third followed in 1959. In his work, unusual for Finnish literature, he referred to ancient literature. What was new was the use of colloquial elements he made. He became a major figure in the 1960s New Left in the cultural field. Saarikoski had lived on the island of Tjörn on the west coast of Sweden since the mid-1970s . The trilogy Tiarnia , published in 1977, 1980 and 1983, is regarded as the highlight and also the conclusion of his work .
He also worked as a translator and translated Homer's Odyssey and Ulysses by James Joyce into Finnish . He has also translated works by JD Salinger , Henry Miller , Sappho and other authors.
In 1974 he was awarded the Aleksis Kivi Prize .
