history

The company was founded in 1945 by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs in Mannheim. Initially, they ran a workshop to repair radio equipment, but according to their own statement, they started manufacturing transformers at the same time . In 1958, Pepperl + Fuchs developed the first inductive proximity switch , which can measure the position of objects electronically and is required, for example, in packaging and filling systems. The decisive factor for the distribution of the product was the fact that, unlike mechanical switches, it works without wear. The demand for the proximity switch led the company to specialize in electronic components and sensors . From the 1970s, production and sales branches were set up abroad, including in China , India , Indonesia , Italy , Singapore and Hungary, as well as the United States . Pepperl + Fuchs had previously been converted from a general partnership into a GmbH & Co. KG .

In December 1987 the two founders Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs left the management of Pepperl + Fuchs, and since then the company has been run as a legal form with limited liability . After Pepperl + Fuchs was initially based in Mannheim-Sandhofen , its headquarters have been in Schönau since 1971 . In Germany, for example, Pepperl + Fuchs is also present in Neuhausen ob Eck , where all of the company's encoders are designed and manufactured. In Asia, production is carried out in Vietnam , among others . Beginning in 2000, Pepperl + Fuchs made several takeovers, which resulted in an increase in sales to over 500 million DM. The companies acquired included Visolux from Berlin and Elcon from Milan, as well as proximity switches and light barriers from Honeywell International . The company was last better known in 2010 when it took over the proximity switch business from Siemens . With this acquisition, we expanded the business, particularly in the field of ultrasonic - sensor . In addition to the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and other partners , Pepperl + Fuchs is also involved in the so-called Smart Factory .

In January 2017, Pepperl + Fuchs took over ecom instruments GmbH from Assamstadt, the technology leader for mobile explosion- protected devices . On February 1, 2019, Pepperl + Fuchs took over all of the shares in Polyplan GmbH in Strasslach. In July 2019, Pepperl + Fuchs GmbH changed into Pepperl + Fuchs AG. According to the Executive Board, this step is a necessary preliminary step in order to be able to change the name to Pepperl + Fuchs SE in 2020, as planned.

Products

Pepperl + Fuchs manufactures non-contact sensors, rotary encoders, counters, switching mechanisms and converters, among other things. There are also fieldbus components and fieldbus systems, data light barriers, identification systems and safety barriers as well as products for image processing. The company itself divides its portfolio into industrial sensors and process interfaces for factory and process automation . Pepperl + Fuchs is also a provider of system solutions for process automation in potentially explosive areas, which are developed in the so-called Solution Engineering Centers in Bühl , among others . With the takeover of ecom instruments GmbH, explosion-proof products from the fields of mobile computing, communication, measurement and calibration technology as well as hand lamps were added to the portfolio.

In addition to the European warehouse in Mannheim, the company has another logistics center in America and Asia . A global distribution center was also set up in Singapore.
