Perfect Number (original title Yonguija X ) is a crime film by the South Korean director Pang Eun-jin from 2012. It is an adaptation of the novel Suspicious Lovers by Keigo Higashino . The film is about a math teacher who plans to create the perfect alibi for his neighbor when she murdered her ex-husband.

The film was released in South Korean cinemas on October 18, 2012 and reached over 1.5 million viewers.

action

Hwa-sun lives with her niece, Yoon-ah. One day her ex-husband shows up, breaks into the apartment and beats Hwa-sun and her niece. However, Hwa-sun and Yoon-ah fight back and kill the man in the process. Your neighbor, Seok-go, heard the noise in the apartment. He quickly realized what must have happened. He offers his help for an alibi.

The police are made aware of a body on the Han River , with a smashed face and burned hands. Nearby there is a barrel with burnt clothes, a hotel key and a bicycle on the edge. The police quickly find out that it must be Hwa-sun's ex-husband. But this one has an alibi. She was at the cinema with her niece. However, the police are still investigating them and also questioning their neighbors. This is an old school friend of the investigated police officer Jo Min-beom. Both meet. After a while, however, Jo realizes that Seok-go must be in love with Hwa-sun.

Seok-go feels caught and confesses to the murder in Hwa-sun's place. Min-beom is still convinced that Hwa-sun is the murderer. He finds out that Seok-go must have killed a homeless man the day after the ex-husband was murdered and smashed his face as a result. The cops should think he's the ex-husband. So he could easily work out an alibi for the two women.

background

In contrast to the novel, which focuses on the riddle, Pang Eun-jin emphasizes the relationship between Seok-go and Hwa-sun in its adaptation. Pang used the Suspicious Lovers scenario , but changed some details. The role of the physicist Yukawa is not part of the South Korean film adaptation.

reception

Jason Bechervaise had a positive review of the film. The camera work was flawless and the locations were cleverly chosen. Ryu Seung-bum's performance as a math genius is also excellent. The same applies to Lee Yo-won and Cho Jin-woong .
