Pernå ( Swedish ), Finnish. Pernaja , is a former municipality in the Ostuusimaa region on the south coast of Finland . Since its incorporation in 2010, it is administratively part of the city of Loviisa , which has been part of the Uusimaa region since 2011 .

The church village of Pernå is located at the end of the 20 km long Pernåviken bay (Pernajanlahti) 11 kilometers west of the center of Loviisa. In total, the municipality covered an area of ​​426.8 square kilometers (excluding the marine areas). The last population was 3,961. Of these, 57.8% were Finland-Sweden , making the municipality officially bilingual with Swedish as the majority and Finnish as the minority language.

A permanent settlement has existed since the 13th century, Pernå was first mentioned in a document in 1352. The place was on the Königsstrasse , the old route of the Swedish kings from Turku to Viipuri . In 1362 Pernå became an independent parish , which initially included the area of Pyhtää , Ruotsinpyhtää , Lapinjärvi , Myrskylä , Loviisa and Liljendal . The church of Pernå , which has been preserved to this day, dates from around 1440. Around 1509 the reformer and Bible translator Mikael Agricola was born in Pernå. An ironworks was founded in Koskenkylä near Pernå in 1682 . In the following years several stately manors were built.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent municipality of Pernå merged with the city of Loviisa and the municipalities of Liljendal and Ruotsinpyhtää to form the city of Loviisa.
