Donald Pete Turner (born May 30, 1934 in Albany (New York) , † September 18, 2017 in Long Island ) was an American photographer who stood out for his intense color scheme. According to PDN , he is one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time.

Turner has been taking pictures since 1945, initially in black and white; since 1948 he made experiences with color photography . From 1952 to 1956 he studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology with Ralph Hattersley , Robert Bagby , Les Strobel and Minor White with fellow students Bruce Davidson and Jerry Uelsmann . His first work appeared in the Popular Photography Annual as early as 1956 . During the subsequent military service, he worked in the paint laboratory of the US Army.

Even then he made contact with the record producer Creed Taylor , for whom he has designed the photos for numerous albums since 1959; Initially, these were pictures of musicians, later, due to the color scheme, object and landscape photographs that appear very abstract. In 1986 Turner published his first illustrated book, Pete Turner Photographs (Abrams Books). In 2001 his second book, Pete Turner African Journey (Graphis Inc.) appeared, which summarizes Turner's recordings from Africa. In 2006 he published The Color of Jazz ( Rizzoli ), a selection of 80 of his photos that adorned the records of CTI Records and other labels.
