Peter von Cornelius Monument
The Peter von Cornelius Monument is a historical statue in Düsseldorf , located as the point de vue of Königsallee and Corneliusplatz on the edge of the Hofgarten . The statue honors the painter Peter von Cornelius , the first director of the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf and the co-founder of the Düsseldorf School of Painting . It was designed by the sculptor Adolf von Donndorf and inaugurated on June 24, 1879 in the presence of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia . At a celebration that followed in the evening in Malkastenpark, a pageant with figures based on paintings by Cornelius was performed to the sound of the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the Malkasten Timpani March by Julius Tausch .
description
The bronze sculpture shows Peter von Cornelius as a standing figure of set age. The figure of the honored, holding a brush with his right hand and his cloak with his left, stands on a bronze base, which in turn rests on a dark reddish to reddish brown granite base, neo-baroque shape . On the transverse sides of the pedestal there are seated female bronze figures as allegories of poetry and piety. The allegory of poetry holds a lyre, that of piety holds the Bible and cross. The front and back of the base show further allegorical figures in reliefs: in the front the painting, equipped with a palette, in front of it a winged sphinx , in the back those of Germania and Italia , the latter crowning the former with a laurel wreath . Further relief plates are embedded in the foot of the base. They show Faust and Helena in tendrils . The names of the cities of Düsseldorf, Berlin, Munich and Rome, the places where the artist worked, are emblazoned on inscriptions at the top of the base.
